چکیده

Introduction: The use of Fourier-velocity-encoding(FVE) M-mode MRI to measure pulse wave velocity (PWV) in arteries has great potential in determining vessel health as PWV provides an indirect measure of distensibility [1]. Previous reports have shown compelling results indicating the utility of this method in vivo. However, the actual values of arterial compliance in vivo are generally unknown, and because of the difficulty in obtaining arterial specimens following in vivo imaging, a systematic validation of the technique has not yet been performed. The aim of this study is to develop an in-vitro model for validating the FVE based distensibility calculations.

Bramwell-Hill modeling for local aortic pulse wave velocity estimation: a validation study with velocity-encoded cardiovascular magnetic resonance and invasive pressure assessment

BACKGROUND The Bramwell-Hill model describes the relation between vascular wall stiffness expressed in aortic distensibility and the pulse wave velocity (PWV), which is the propagation speed of the systolic pressure wave through the aorta. The main objective of this study was to test the validity of this model locally in the aorta by using PWV-assessments based on in-plane velocity-encoded card...

Reduced ascending aortic strain and distensibility: earliest manifestations of vascular aging in humans.

Arterial stiffness predicts cardiovascular events beyond traditional risk factors. However, the relationship with aging of novel noninvasive measures of aortic function by MRI and their interrelationship with established markers of vascular stiffness remain unclear and currently limit their potential impact. Our aim was to compare age-related changes of central measures of aortic function with ...

Aortic size, distensibility, and pulse wave velocity changes with aging: longitudinal analysis from Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

Arterial stiffening is related to an intricate interplay between aging and other cardiovascular risk factors. The aortic arch accounts for most of the vascular buffering function and is primarily involved in arterial stiffening. MRI has been used to noninvasively measure strain, distensibility, and pulse wave velocity of the ascending aorta. We report aortic size and stiffness changes over mid ...

Robust segmentation methods with an application to aortic pulse wave velocity calculation

Aortic stiffness has proven to be an important diagnostic and prognostic factor of many cardiovascular diseases, as well as an estimate of overall cardiovascular health. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) represents a good measure of the aortic stiffness, while the aortic distensibility is used as an aortic elasticity index. Obtaining the PWV and the aortic distensibility from magnetic resonance imaging...

Arterial distensibility in normal and hypertensive man.

1. The pulse-wave velocity along the brachial radial artery was measured in 38 subjects and volume distensibility values were calculated. 2. Measurements made at each subject's resting blood pressure showed that those with high blood pressure had higher pulse-wave velocity values and hence less distensible arteries. 3. An acute rise in arterial distending pressure was accompanied by a rise in p...
